Our Q&A while using Equine from 'War Horse'
Hello. It's the Friday mid-previous day Christmas so when my office is anything as if your office, it's pretty empty at this time around. Chances are, you aren't really at the office. Chances are you will not ever see this because you are well on the plane or train to somewhere that you just either love (or dislike) for your holiday weekend. However when you are in the office, you may be fighting to discover a thing that helps it be appear like you are keeping busy. Hey, me, too! You don't have to piss in the boss before a extended weekend, right? With this particular, I written a product through which I pretend you interview Joey, the equine from 'War Equine.' Because even though that is utter nonsense, it appears to everyone else around my desk like I'm doing actual work. So, happy holidays, nobody that's reading through through this. It's nice to fulfill you, War Equine is one able to contact you Joey? Neigh. OK, then! Are you currently presently excited for that movie to become launched? Neigh. Oh, well that's disappointing. Did you must do any special learning preparation with this particular film? Neigh. Perhaps you have like coping with Steven Spielberg? Neigh. You will be aware you're the initial actor to ever say "no" compared to that question, right? Neigh. Oh, really. Cure didn't like coping with Spielberg? It's Christian Bale, isn't it? Neigh. Eric Bana? Neigh. Continuing to move forward: You think the socio-economic message of 'War Horse' has any parallels whatsoever for the economic decline that people are actually facing at the begining of twenty-first century? Neigh. Curious. You must as well no less than think 'War Horse' shows the evil of war, whether it is fought against against in trenches or, like today, with tactics different from unmanned drones to terrorism? Neigh. Is 'War Horse' about anything? Neigh. I don't request personal questions, But you'll find people persistent gossips about yourself and Uggie from 'The Artist.' Are people true? Neigh. Is One Able To feed an apple? Neigh. Bad. There's an earnestness to 'War Horse' that's almost shocking much more comparison for the cynicism within our current world. You think the earth will be a better devote 1914, in the moralistic perspective? Neigh. It is therefore better now, within our? Neigh. To be certain, you'll find always shades of grey throughout any era. Interesting time, War Equine, it absolutely was a pleasure to fulfill you. Additionally you. Experts stay with 'The Artist'
Crix stay with 'The Artist.'Critical acclaim hasn't been probably the most reliable bellwether for Oscar glory, however the flurry of finish-of-year options by experts groups offers some understanding of the flicks which have honours momentum. With nearly 20 groups getting already introduced -- and a minimum of twelve left in the future -Body factor is becoming abundantly obvious: Experts like "The Artist." A great deal. The Boston, Indiana, Vegas, NY and North Park orgs happen to be charmed enough through the black-and-whitened pic allow it top honors. Actually, having a total of seven to date, Michel Haznavicius' "The Artist" has gained more best-picture nods from experts groups than other Oscar challengers like "The Descendants" (four: Houston, La, Florida and Southeastern), "The Tree of Existence" (four: African-American Film Experts, Bay Area, Toronto and Chicago) and "Hugo" (one: the nation's Board of Review). Deficiencies in recognition for "The Assistance,Inch that is still considered a really viable contender for Oscar, points towards the disconnect between experts and Academy voters. The film is really a virtual lock for any best picture Oscar nom and is constantly on the collect kudos for Viola Davis, yet this broad-based drama that gained almost $170 million in the box office is a touch too conventional for experts. Despite the concept experts are from touch using the Oscar election, the groups' ancillary groups reveal some definite consensus. For his menacing submit "Drive," Albert Brooks has gained ten best supporting actor nods from experts groups -- a lot more than every other thesp in almost any category. The possible lack of a SAG nomination continues to be his only weakness in order to an Oscars berth. Christopher Plummer has gained five experts picks for his role in "Beginners," as well as the SAG nom. The kudos for lead actor happen to be a lot more spread around, with Michael Fassbender ("Shame"), Michael Shannon ("Take Shelter") and George Clooney ("The Descendants") generating three each and Kaira Pitt ("Moneyball," "Tree of Existence") at two. Lead actress kudos go to Michelle Williams six occasions for "My Week With Marilyn," adopted carefully by Tilda Swinton for "We have to Discuss Kevin" and Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady," each at three. Viola Davis continues to be drawn on by two groups for "The Assistance.Inch Supporting stars Jessica Chastain (for multiple roles) and Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") happen to be named in four experts bulletins. "Bridesmaids" supporting actress Melissa McCarthy proceeds the roll she began in the Emmys in September, generating three experts nods to date. "The Help's" Octavia Spencer continues to be drawn on two times. Even though the cinematography category is not usually towards the top of handicappers' lists, one title has centered for experts: "Tree of Existence" d.p. Emmanuel Lubezki continues to be drawn on for his work 11 occasions. Contact Christy Grosz at christy.grosz@variety.com

Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday Head Off Holiday Stress!
First Published: December 14, 2011 12:17 PM EST Credit: ABC Caption Maksim and Val ChmerkovskiyLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Heads up! The holidays are fun and festive but also frenzied. Between frantic gift shopping runs to the mall and jam-packed party schedules, the most Zen of us can end up feeling frazzled! Just thinking of all the things I have left to do before Christmas gets my heart racing. Slow down breathe and indulge in some relaxing me-time. A perfect antidote to the holiday madness is a stress reducing head massage. The head has many sensory points aligned with major organs in your body. Especially since its closet to the brain and the eyes. A head massage will give you an allover release and will affect the majority of your body, reveals hairstylist and shiatsu expert, Fabio Scalia. At his signature salon in NY City, Fabio offers haircuts, along with toxin-releasing head massages. Dancing with the Stars hotties Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy head to Fabios whenever theyre in town to de-stress before a performance. This therapeutic, soothing treatment removes the pressure from your follicles and releases stress by massaging pressure points in the scalp and only takes 2 minutes, adds Fabio. According to the wellness website Livestrong, a head massage also helps to increase blood flow to your scalp and better blood flow means the good nutrients go where theyre supposed and the bad toxins get released. Plus, you dont need to jet to NY to get a head massage look for treatments at your local salon, or even better do a head and scalp self-massage. Close your eyes, rotate the skin around the cranium. A trick is to see if your skin doesnt move much when you rotate then you have a lot of tension in the scalp and need to release it, suggests Fabio. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. Martha Stewart Deal With J.C. Penney Annoys Macy's
20th Century Fox Television co-chairman Dana Walden lands at No. 5 on the Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment list this week. In February, she'll celebrate 20 years with the company.our editor recommends'Glee': Chord Overstreet Offers 5 Things to Know About Sam's ReturnTV Ratings: 'Glee' and 'New Girl' Hit Season Lows for Soft Fox Win, Michael Buble Premieres a Modest 'Christmas'20th Century Fox TV Studio Execs Talk Tim Allen's Return to TV, Seth MacFarlane's 'Flintstones' Reboot (Q&A)THR's Women in Entertainment 2011: Power 100 Her accomplishments: Too many to count, but for starters, there's the Emmy Award-winning Modern Family, the No. 3 show of the fall season among adults 18-49 (second only to football and Two and a Half Men); How I Met Your Mother, up 24% in total viewers since this time last year; and Sons of Anarchy, FX's highest-rated series ever. Not to mention 20th TV has five new shows on four networks this year, New Girl, Terra Nova, Last Man Standing, American Horror Story and Homeland, each showing strong strides in viewership. And finally, there's The Simpsons, broadcasting its 500thepisode in February. All told, Walden looks after 34 shows currently in production. PHOTOS:The Scene at THR's 2011 Women In Entertainment Power 100 Breakfast But even with beloved classics like The X Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer under her belt, there's no denying the TV powerhouse that is Glee. Now in its third season on Fox, it remains the No. 1 scripted hour on television among 18- to 34-year-olds, while the worldwide Glee brand, which includes a record-breaking tour, 36 million songs sold on iTunes, 11 top-selling albums and a theatrical concert film, serves as an awe-inspiring example of cross-platform marketing at its finest. That's not to say the show hasn't taken its licks, however, and this year more than ever thanks to casting confusion and an occasional dip in the numbers -- like this week's episode which saw a 9 percent decline. It's backlash the press-savvy Walden, herself a former publicist, can't deny, but she doesn't make any apologies, either. "I don't think anything in the history of the medium could burn as brightly as Glee and not experience some period of time when the show is not the golden child," she tells the Hollywood Reporter. "It will be again. I fully believe in this series. I think that [co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] and his team have done exactly the right thing -- you put your head down, tell great stories and continue to produce an enormously entertaining show." PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of Fox's 'New Girl' Walden contends that because the criticism is mostly media-based, it doesn't speak to the passion of the audience. "They are connected to these characters," she says. "They read about the actors and the characters online, they collect the DVDs, they buy the merchandise, they are part of a community that connects with each other all centered on one TV show... At some point, it won't feel sexy to take shots at Glee anymore." Furthermore, where the ratings are concerned, Walden insists she and her fellow chairman Gary Newman aren't worried. "When you look at the live plus three and the live plus seven ratings, the show is still doing in excess of a five rating," she says. "Any company would be thrilled to have that show. I am not concerned about the ratings." VIDEO: Gary Numan, Dana Walden at 'Glee' 3D Premiere Still, working with creatives like Murphy does come with challenges, and in a way, it's what Walden lives for. "There's a whole emotional component to working with creative individuals which is unlike most businesses," she says. "I am not interested in working with a writer who wants to take every one of my notes. I'm looking for someone who will be thoughtful about my input and respect that we are partners, [but] I also want our creators to be emotional, passionate people because those are the people who tell the best stories. Ryan and I have an incredible relationship. We have a tremendous amount of trust for each other. I trust his instincts as much as anyone I have ever worked with. He has this incredible sense of what's in the zeitgeist." STORY:Anne Sweeney Tops THR's 2011 Women in Entertainment Power 100 List What is difficult about working with Murphy? "Saying no to him," Walden laughs. "He always gets the benefit of the doubt with me. Of the ideas he and I discuss, probably 90% of them I would pursue in some way. He's such a hard worker and so clear about his vision -- that's exactly what you want from a creator. And when he's set on something, he believes in it completely. Again, it's how I prefer it. I would rather work with someone like Ryan than someone who is purely pragmatic." It's a formula that's led to Walden's proudest -- and busiest -- year yet. "I cannot imagine a time in the company's history where we were experiencing success on as many different platforms as we are right now," she says. "But I've been very happy in my job. I've worked at this company for a long time and it's been a tremendous experience. Certainly this has been an incredible year for me personally." ITV Verifies Simon Cowell Coming back To Enhance Britains Got Talent
Deadline contributor Tim Adler files this worldwide report: Simon Cowell will return among the idol judges on next years Britains Got Talent, ITV boss Adam Crozier has confirmed. The X Factor impresario will resume his chair around the talent show following a recent exits of idol judges David Hasselhof and Michael McIntyre. Talking with press this mid-day working in london, the ITV boss also suggested that ITV Galleries might be out to buy a united states production company, mentioning the US may be the second-liveliest marketplace for independent TV producers aside from the United kingdom. For the time being though, Crozier is focusing on eliminating the 612 million price of debt he inherited by year-finish. Whenever you inherit something which is not working, the worst factor you should do is start bolting things on, he stated. The ex-United kingdom postal service Boss was self-deprecating about how big the job facing him in turning ITV around. Group turnover rose 4% to at least one.5 billion within the first 9 several weeks of the season. If the would be a school report, I'd summarize it as being, good solid progress but plenty more must be done, he stated. Were about 1 / 3 of how to where we have to reach. Regarding Cowell, Crozier eliminated flying him in next fall to carry out a save mission to the X Factor that is losing to BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing (also known as Dwts in america) nearly every Saturday evening. Crozier shrugged off mutterings that British audiences are finally tiring from the X Factor, that is in the eighth season. X Factor remains the most viewed tv program whenever you mix the Saturday or sunday viewing figures, he stated. He was keen to speak up the prosperity of ITVs in-house production division, ITV Galleries (that is seen by experts like a millstone round ITVs neck since the broadcaster needs to keep commissioning ITV Galleries instead of throw open the commissioning process completely for independent producers). To date, ITV Galleries has elevated its share of shows commissioned this season to 55% in comparison to 47% this year. 1 / 2 of individuals shows happen to be offered overseas such as the Titanic miniseries airing on ABC that’s attended 57 areas. Titanic is an extremely good illustration of the way we work now, Crozier stated. This program is at profit before we began which makes it.

Screenplay, Faenza, Dahlia Heyman, based on the novel by Peter Cameron. With: Toby Regbo, Marcia Gay Harden, Peter Gallagher, Lucy Liu, Stephen Lang, Deborah Ann Woll, Ellen Burstyn, Aubrey Plaza, Gilbert Owuor, Dree Hemingway, Olek Krupa, Siobhan Fallon, Brooke Schlosser, Kyle Coffman, Jonny Weston, Kate Kiley, Rekha Elizabeth Luther. (English dialogue)A lot can be done with the title of Roberto Faenza's "Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You," though it's best to kindly say that the Italo helmer's second English-lingo pic in 28 years (since Harvey Keitel starrer "Copkiller") is a misfire. Strong cast members can't do much to help their less talented colleagues, and the flat script, about a family of kooky NYers, strives for a sophistication it simply can't reach. "Someday" opens in Italy in February, but Stateside auds won't buy the plethora of patently false situations, likely restricting U.S. play to streaming sites. Seventeen-year-old James (up-and-coming Brit Toby Rego) narrates, saying he doesn't like to talk much. There are quite a few things he says, or are said about him, that don't jive with what's onscreen, though the scripters aren't being perverse, just sloppy. Another character taken from the over-plundered Holden Caulfield mold, James appears to be about to jump from the roof of his brownstone, but then mom Marjorie (Marcia Gay Harden) pulls up, home early after a failed honeymoon. She's a much-divorced impulsive gallery owner (another well-worn type), long split from James' dad, Paul (Peter Gallagher), a big biz swinger. There's also James' older sis, Gillian (Deborah Ann Woll), who has father-figure issues; and their grandma, Nanette (Ellen Burstyn), Marjorie's mom and the only family member with whom James feels a special connection. He's spending the summer working at Marjorie's gallery and apparently harboring a crush on gallery director John (Gilbert Owuor). James is supposed to go to Brown U. but decides he's not interested in college. Marjorie isn't having such nonsense and sends him to life coach Rowena (Lucy Liu), whose patient ear allows him to articulate his feelings. She also gets him to confront "what happened in D.C.," an event frequently referred to in troubled tones, which, when revealed, proves to be nothing more than a mild panic attack. In fact, much of "Someday" engages in making mountains out of molehills, such as James' misguided but hardly treacherous prank in which he pretends to be someone else so he can connect with John on a gay dating site. Levels of reaction to various events throughout the pic are off-kilter, but nothing is as cringe-worthy as a scene in D.C., when the busload of students on a young leaders' getaway spontaneously -- and apparently, without parody -- burst into "America the Beautiful" when spying the Capitol. It's indicative of how much the film gets wrong about America, and there are times when it feels as if Faenza's understanding of "kids these days" stopped some time in the 1960s; a school dance resembles a sock-hop more than something from 2011. The kooky family wants to be cousins of the Royal Tenenbaums, but there's no edge or cleverness here. Regbo is fine, and comes through relatively unscathed. Harden can do this kind of Americanized "Absolutely Fabulous" role with her eyes shut, and Burstyn forms an island of substance in a very shallow sea. Though Liu's role is tiny, she once again proves that her talents are being criminally neglected. Woll and Owuor, however, turn in weak perfs. Gotham and the 'burbs look attractive through ace d.p. Maurizio Calvesi's lens, though it's a sunny kind of blandness that fits with the overall impression of a film made by a visitor and not a resident. Sound, at least at the Rome fest screening, was overly resonant.Camera (color), Maurizio Calvesi; editor, Massimo Fiocchi; music, Andrea Guerra; production designer, Tommaso Ortino; costume designer, Donna Zakowska; sound (Dolby Digital), David Pastecchi; associate producer, Adriano Wajskol; line producer, Sean Fogel; casting, Avy Kaufman. 'Another Happy Day''Bridesmaids''Enlightened''Higher Ground''We Need to Discuss Kevin'"Every year around honours season there's talk of the amount of great roles you will discover for girls,In . states Vera Farmiga, the director-star of "Greater Ground." "There's however really this dearth of roles readily available for ladies.Inch "Greater Ground" -- based on Carolyn S. Briggs' memoir "This Dark World," is about a born-again Christian who questions her belief while attempting to locate her own voice. Farmiga thought so strongly inside the project that whenever financing fell through and ongoing to maneuver forward meant she will have to step behind the digital camera the first time, she made the plunge -- this despite being three several days pregnant as well as the growing physical discomfort she experienced through the shoot. Casting her boy Fynn in the cameo and kid sister Taissa Farmiga as her youthful self aided turn the film in to a family affair (in addition to saved your financial allowance lower). "Bold" is vital word here, since for the majority of the industry's most picky stars, landing complex, challenging parts that resonate personally suggests that passivity is unthinkable and taking having the project is important. For Kristen Wiig, finding a means to illustrate the particular pros and cons in female associations will be a motivation when she co-written "Bridesmaids" with friend Annie Mumolo. "Annie (Mumolo) have been to several wedding events once we started writing 'Bridesmaids' but we'd both seen how prone to wedding events or becoming a maid-matron of honor could make you appear like everyone is configuring it together and continuing to move forward when you may be not doing that," states Wiig. "I had been since the associations ladies have and the way they modify when people occasions happen." Ellen Barkin was deeply moved by Mike Levinson's script for "Another Happy Day," an account that includes multiple effective female roles for girls that you can get across different decades. She also understood that since Levinson will be a first-time director-author, her veteran industry cred might help the project get made. It absolutely was in those days she made a decision to don multiple hats as producer and actress, helping persuade Ellen Burstyn, Demi Moore and Kate Bosworth to register too. "I desired to understand another expertise however felt so accomplished afterwards because you see everything Mike (Levinson) written on the internet for on the watch's screen,In . states Barkin. "The fantastic a lot of it was that Mike didn't understand why it might be an problem to experience a story where a lot of the great roles are for girls over 45, as they desired to inform the story of individuals figures." Knocking lower obstacles based on age or appearance also be a huge hit to Laura Dern when she co-created "Enlightened," an Cinemax series of a middle-age lady who encounters a spiritual awakening carrying out a painful phase in their existence. The posters for your show -- which feature an unhinged Dern, with tear streaks of thick, black mascara running lower her face -- burglary the traditional way women's images are employed to sell a project. "You will see the smile lines throughout my face," laughs Dern. "That's essential as this character needs to be proven as she's, in their 40s, in this condition of rage about a number of what have happened to her, being impossible and looking influence telecomutting saves gas.Inch Tilda Swinton, who's no stranger for the production process, was attracted into much much deeper participation with "We must Discuss Kevin" becoming an executive producer. Watercooler: Grey's Anatomy ... TV's 99 Percent Pure Soap
Scott Foley Hey daytime fans, if you're not already watching Grey's Anatomy, or gave up on it, the time has come to give ABC's scrubs-opera another look-see. Because this here is a solid serial that could teach a certain other medical-based sudser on ABC's early shift a thing or two about how to operate effectively without bipolar mobsters or James Franco. Now we know a lot of viewers may have checked out of Seattle Grace over the years, and nobody is gonna shame ya for that. Once the ghost sex and "Gizzie" and the drawn-out Chief Resident competition went down, Grey's lost some of its appeal. But we're happy to inform you that the patient has recovered nicely and last night, delivered a lively hour filled with death, dumb decisions and respectably soapy drama. Built around the idea of "a bad day at work," the docs endured it all: A surgical mishap that left Callie and Jackson's spinal surgery patient with a loose screw stabbing her heart; a transport crisis that stranded Meredith, Alex and an ailing infant on the side of the road in a "powder keg" of a broken-down ambulance; and, most tragically, the race to save Teddy's adorable, chronically ill husband. Yeah, you kinda knew Scott Foley was doomed, what with the vomiting blood and the fact that he was being operated on at the worst hospital on the planet. By Yang, no less! Yet we were chewing our nails up 'til the final moments, as Owen broke the news to Yang that it had been Henry she so cavalierly treated as just another dead patient, and Meredith and Alex finally realized that they probably should have thought to help the folks in the car that collided with their ambulance. Of course, none of these problems would have plagued any of our heroes had they made smarter choices, but that would be about as fun as a conversation with Lexie. We need these doctors to suffer for their stupidity. Will Meredith and Derek ever get a baby? Or agree on anything? Will Teddy forgive her colleagues for not saving Henry? And can Torres get herself out of what is sure to become a real malpractice pickle? Hell, if they could all survive that musical episode last year, there's no doubt they'll bounce back. Just how they'll manage to do so is what still keeps us in a lather. What about you? Still on board with Grey's? Or simply bored with Grey's? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Gross! The Brains Behind The Walking Dead Dissect the Premiere's Zombie Autopsy
The Walking Dead [Warning: The following story contains spoilers from the Season 2 premiere of The Walking Dead. Read at your own risk.]AMC's The Walking Dead has never been for the squeamish, so it should come as no surprise that the Season 2 premiere would attempt what executive producer Robert Kirkman calls "one of the grossest things we have ever come up with."The Walking Dead looks for life after Frank DarabontLed by Deputy Sherriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), the show's band of zombie-apocalypse survivors left Atlanta behind in hopeful search of a safe haven at an abandoned military fort. However, the gang was stalled as they reached a section of interstate that was blocked with abandoned vehicles. When Rick and Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn) spotted a "herd" of walkers approaching, everyone quickly hid under cars until the mob had passed. But shortly thereafter, a couple of straggling zombies chased little Sophia (Madison Lintz) into the woods.Despite Rick's best efforts to save her - including bashing two zombies' brains in with a rock - Sophia never returned to the group, which instantly formed into a search party. When Rick and Darryl (Norman Reedus) came across a zombie who had just fed, they feared Sophia had become breakfast, but there was only one way to know for sure: They gutted the zombie and checked the contents of its stomach."I think I had the idea of doing like a CSI examination of fingernails and examining the zombie's mouth," Kirkman, who wrote the graphic novels upon which the series is based, tells TVGuide.com. "From that point on, it really just became a fun spit-balling session in the writer's room. [Writer Scott Gimple] made the suggestion of actually cutting the thing open and diving in there. ... [It's] one of the grossest things we have ever come up with."The Walking Dead: Creator weighs in on Season 1's biggest mysteryNewly installed showrunner Glen Mazzara says the scene was originally even more disgusting. But once it was edited, the scene also became darkly funny. "I decided to cut it down and really play a lot of sound effects," Mazzara says. "Then you get into the gore and Andy Lincoln does such a great job of playing the fact that he's nauseous. We just really love it. We think it's fun and memorable."While Mazzara and Kirkman agree that chuckling through the grossness is fine, they hope the audience realizes the stakes facing the characters in this world. "It's such an absurd situation ... but of course they would make that decision," Mazzara says. "Hopefully the audience will say, 'Well, yes, if I was there, of course I would gut that zombie.' These are people dealing with life and death situations every day. ...They live in terror that they might not make it through the day."To that end, the episode ends with a doozy of a cliff-hanger. While admiring a deer in the woods with Rick and Shane (Jon Bernthal), Carl (Chandler Riggs) was shot by an unknown assailant. Mazzara says the accident will have major impact on the rest of the season, particularly for his mother, Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies).Check out photos of the Walking Dead cast"She becomes a very major character, not just Rick's wife," he says. "When I was put into my new position, that was something that I immediately started to develop in a way that we had not previously planned. The more pressure we could put on our central character, the better. Rick is not only facing questions of leadership, but he is also facing marital problems, and a personal crisis."Adds Kirkman: "It's really a centerpiece of the season. Carl getting shot really kind of turns everyone's attention toward the fact that there are so many dangers in this world you can hardly keep track of them. He definitely wasn't shot by a zombie. [Rick and Lori] have to take note that no matter how hard you try, you just can't protect a child from everything. ...You figure out how to survive in this world, but if you really start to examine it, it starts to look like it's kind of impossible."What did you think of The Walking Dead's season premiere?

Bill Clinton's Lavish Fund-Raising Weekend in L.A.: Preview of Events Featuring Lady Gaga, Bono, Kenny Chesney
Think of it as the political equivalent of one of those Eagles revival tours -- nostalgia, a reminder of their greatest hits and very tight music.our editor recommendsKenny Chesney Added to Bill Clinton's Hollywood Bowl ConcertPresident Obama to Hollywood: 'I Never Promised You Easy'Chelsea Clinton Interviews Mom, Hillary, at Clinton Global InitiativeObama Adds Second Event to Los Angeles Fund-Raising Trip (Exclusive) Friday through Sunday, all three of the Clintons -- Bill, the former president; Hillary, the current Secretary of State; and daughter Chelsea -- will be in Los Angeles to celebrate Bill's 65th birthday and do some ambitious fund-raising for the William J. Clinton Foundation, which is now 10 years old. PHOTOS: 10 Hollywood Players That Will Make a Difference in the 2012 Elections The entertainment industry always has loved the Clintons, and why not? It's a business that values personal relationships, and the Clintons are ferocious networkers -- Friends of Bill, Friends of Hillary and, now, Friends of Chelsea -- interwoven in a fabric of loyalty. It's also not a family that takes opposition lightly: "Never get in a knife fight with a Clinton" is virtually a Democratic maxim. Most of all, Hollywood admires their dazzling and instinctive political skills -- something many suspect in lacking in the party's current leader, President BarackObama. "I give him credit," said Los Angeles political consultant Bill Carrick. "Clinton keeps working at it. People are still mesmerized by him." It certainly says something about the Clinton-Hollywood relationship that the former chief executive would feel comfortable tapping the industry's Dems for tens of thousands of dollars in charitable donations with a general election looming. And the scale of this weekend's festivities -- which Chelsea is chairing -- is lavish. PHOTOS: Best Presidents in Film and Television The weekend will kick off with a public memorial service for philanthropist Edie Wasserman at UCLA's Royce Hall. The former first couple are expected to attend the services honoring Hollywood's "first lady." Wasserman was the wife of longtime Universal chairman Lew, a powerful force in the entertainment industry and in politics. Also attending the services is Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. After the service, the Clintons will head to the Hollywood Palladium for a birthday gala for Bill, with Stevie Nicks performing. On Saturday, there's a 7 p.m. benefit concert for the Clinton Foundation at the Hollywood Bowl featuring Lady Gaga, Bono and the Edge, Usher, Kenny Chesney, K'naan and other artists. PHOTOS: Box Office Politics: The Movies and Stars Dems vs. GOPers Love (and Love to Hate) Those who raise between $500,000 and $1 million for the Clinton Foundation will get an invitation to the weekend's more intimate events, including Saturday brunch at Haim and Cheryl Saban's Beverly Hills compound, personally hosted by Chelsea and her husband,Marc Mezvinsky, and a round of golf on Sunday with Clinton. (No word on where the former president and family are staying. When Clinton was chief executive, he would often stay at Saban's lavish estate.) "They are wonderful people," Saban told THR. "They have dedicated their whole life to public service and continue to do so with stellar results. They are family to the Sabans." Not everyone has to be a millionaire to attend the weekend's events: While $100,000 gets you good seats at the gala and concert and access to VIP receptions, a more modest $6,500 gets a pretty good seat at the Palladium gala. A mere $50 secures a concert seat somewhere in the Hollywood Bowl's upper reaches. All in all, quite a party -- and, potentially, quite a haul for the Clinton Foundation's good works, which include improving global health, strengthening economies worldwide, promoting healthier childhoods and protecting the environment. "Let's tell Ofcom what we think about James Murdoch," Watson urged delegates. "I wouldn't put him on the board of an ornamental garden. He's certainly not a fit and proper person to chair a major broadcaster." Ofcom, the British media regulator in charge of broadcasting, is currently looking at whether News Corporation meets the so-called "fit and proper" standards required to own a broadcaster in the light of the mountain of phone-hacking revelations. BSkyB, whose board have given James Murdoch their unanimous support, said they had "no comment." In an impassioned debate at the Party conference, Watson said that it was only a matter of time before phone-hacking was discovered to extend beyond the News of the Worldto other News International titles including The Sun. "Do you really think that hacking only happened on the News of the World?" he said, according to reports of the conference proceedings. "Askthe current editor of The Sun. He used to joke about lax security at Vodafone when he attended celebrity parties. Ask the editor of The Sunif he thinks Rupert Murdoch's contagion has spread to other newspapers. If he gives you an honest answer, he'll tell you it's only a matter of time before we find The Sunin the evidence file of the convicted private investigator that hacked Milly Dowler'sphone." Watson also said that concerns had been raised at The Times. Speaking as political parties attempt to account for their own close relationships with Murdoch's power base. Watson said that a culture had been The culture where hacking was allowed to thrive was down to "police failure, a newspaper out of control, politicians refusing to act". "There is no point in us glossing over it. We got too close to the Murdochs and allowed them to become too powerful," he said. Fantastic Fest: Bare-Knuckle Champ James Quinn McDonagh Talks Knuckle - and Its Planned HBO Series
Within the insular Traveller community in Ireland and parts of the United Kingdom, among clans that are closely related by marriage and birth, conflicts are solved through ritualized bare-knuckle fights buoyed by blood pride and machismo. Think Brad Pitt in Snatch and you get the lighter side of the boxing tradition, but in real life, as documentarian Ian Palmer discovered as he filmed one clan’s champions over the course of 12 years, there’s a dark and tragic nature to the custom that drives the culture. Knuckle combines Palmer’s personal musings as an outside observer with interviews and fight footage of the bare-knuckle bouts, carefully planned and refereed between families to solve disputes - or, as it sometimes appears, to confront perceived slights. His lens focuses on James Quinn McDonagh, a clan champion who reluctantly steps up to fight for his family name despite growing philosophical objections to the practice. Speaking with Movieline at Fantastic Fest, where Knuckle screened, Quinn McDonagh lamented what could have been if the tradition had stopped years ago. “It could have avoided a lot of tragedies, a lot of trouble, a lot of prison times,” he said. “A lot of things could have been avoided if we sat around a table and talked. Hopefully in the future that will happen.” Read on for more with director Ian Palmer and bare-knuckle champion James Quinn McDonagh. Knuckle is about so much more than just bare-knuckle boxing, it’s about this entire tradition that occurs in this specific place and specific community in the world. How did you first find your way in and know you had a story to film? Ian Palmer: I didn’t really find the story… James Quinn McDonagh: The story found him! Palmer: Yeah — I didn’t find a story, I found people. I had no idea where the story was going, but I met the woman James’s brother was going to marry, Jacqueline, one of his cousins, and her family asked me to go on to the wedding. So I met Michael and James at the wedding reception - two guys who I found interesting. And James at that time was a good bit older than Michael, Michael was only 18 years old and James was the big brother. There was something there fairly quickly. James was fighting; they asked me along. So immediately I had something that I was interested in following, but people rather than the fight scene. I was more interested in James, his brother, the families, and why the hell they were fighting these other families. Where it was going to go as a story, I had no idea - no more than James knew back then in 1997 where his life was going to go. It was about life that was going to happen in the future. James, take me through this fighting tradition, and how you first learned about it growing up. McDonagh: In general, the Irish traveling community would settle their arguments or disputes with bare-knuckle fighting, as you’ve seen in the film. If we have an argument or a fight with the Joyces or the Nevins, one of our guys would be put up to defend the family name. Going back a few years ago there would be someone before me, and when my turn came, my calling, I had to answer that call and take the lead role in defending the family name. I’ve done it for 12 years, and my brother Michael has done it. It’s basically a tradition among travelers to have a guy that can stand up, knuckle-wise, and defend the family name. What’s your earliest recollection as a child of seeing this tradition in action, coming to understand how all of this worked and why people did it? McDonagh: Well, the first bare-knuckle fight I’d ever seen was in 1990, between one of the characters in the movie, the guy who fought Big Joe, Aney McGinley. He fought a guy called Dan Rooney who was the season’s champion at the time. I was hooked from that minute. Previously I’d done a lot of boxing in the ring, training as a kid growing up. And it was three years later when I had my first fight, my first street fight, with Ditsy Nevin, and it just took its own road from there. Training physically is one thing, but the sense of honor that drives this tradition is the most striking part of it all. McDonagh: Honor — it all goes back down to who you are. What breed you’re from, what clan in Ireland you are. Palmer: It’s all about defending your family name. I mean, it’s also about two men, maybe young men, wanting to prove themselves and how good they are as individuals. But it’s always in the context of how good you are as a Quinn McDonagh or as a Joyce; it’s about what breed you’re from and representing that family when and if you’re called upon. And not every man is going to be. It’s only going to be a select few, for whatever reason. It may be because they were good in the ring, or it may be because they’re the son of a father. McDonagh: I’ve seen guys fight in Dublin where guys fight a sister’s husband just because it’s a different name. He’s fought his brother-in-law. He’s fought his first cousin. He’s fought his uncle. Just because this guy’s got his mother’s name and that guy’s got his dad’s name. It comes down to the honor of your surname, and the pride of that, and keeping it alive and keeping it above other clans and other breeds of Traveller. Palmer: Let’s say we were brother and sister; you married someone he was feuding with. Your son would be one of them, right? So he’d be potentially an enemy for his son to fight. McDonagh: My sister’s kids would fight with my kids because they’re a Joyce. How do you feel about that? McDonagh: Terrible. Terrible. It’s not right, it’s wrong. I’m totally against it but if I go against it openly I’m going to [dishonor] my family. So as much as I hate it, it’s acceptable in my community. How does your family feel about you voicing your concerns in talking to me now, for instance? McDonagh: You know, this all started with Ian, talking with Ian. When we accepted Ian into the family when he started the documentary, we opened up to Ian and I opened up to him. I was the first person who started trusting Ian. Then my brother Michael, then it took a good few years for the girls to start trusting Ian. He was a nice guy, he used his own bit of charm to get around every one of us, and you know, we talked about me talking to the media now and I don’t mind doing it. I decided there are things in Knuckle that need to be told, and I don’t mind talking about it. In the film there are female members of the family who voice their opposition to the fighting tradition, who think it should stop. McDonagh: Yeah, the females, the women don’t want to do it. But in the traveler’s tradition and traveler culture, in this business of bare-knuckle boxing the women take a backseat. They can voice their opinions but the guys don’t listen to them, you know? The guys don’t listen because it’s all macho; the guys want to be seen as the leaders of those clans. Years ago, they probably should have listened to some of the older women and this would have never happened. It could have avoided a lot of tragedies, a lot of trouble, a lot of prison times… a lot of things could have been avoided if we sat around a table and talked. Hopefully in the future that will happen. You seem to have moved past this frame of mind yourself. McDonagh: I’ve seen the other side of the fence, and it’s greener. It’s better. I didn’t realize I had a choice in saying, “No, I don’t want to fight,” but I did, and I do. I should have said that years ago. Looking back on it I should have done it and I wanted to do it, but I would have let a lot of people down by not going out and defending my family name. Palmer: The thing is, if James had said no there would have been someone in his place. McDonagh: There would have been somebody in my place and I would have gone back to doing it because if they didn’t beat the guy, we would have been down — they would have been on top of this pedestal and it would be our decision to go and knock them off it. I’d have come back in, and trained on that, so it’s a never-ending circle. The only thing that stops you, really, is age. The older you get, you just have to move on and let someone younger take your place. Palmer: Then again, in the film there are two guys who are heading toward 60 [who are fighting]… And that’s the moment when you admit, within the film, that you began to have doubts about what you were doing filming these fights. Palmer: That was an eye-opener, yeah. At that time there were a few fights I thought were particularly violent, that impacted on me. McDonagh: Dangerous. Palmer: When the two old guys fight that’s Big Joe and Aney McGinley, both heading towards 60, James was the referee. We were up in the middle of the forest, there was a track going up, and it wasn’t that I was scared at that time, although it was a very tense time. There were a lot of people at that fight, which was not normal. Normally there’s very few people there. But all of the families that are represented in this film were there, within this forest clearing, screaming at each other, with James in the middle with one or two other guys to keep the peace — keep the peace between the families to let the fighters get on with what they were doing. But that wasn’t the reason I was put off. I was just weary of the whole thing. I was filming, and filming, and filming, and didn’t know when I was going to find an end or a way to finish the film, I had no money. And also I felt that when I looked at footage from that, here I was getting a kick out of it with the camera. I wasn’t finding a way to finish the film, I was finding a way to go to the fights. So there was kind of a self-realization there that I could be heading in the wrong direction, and I put it away for a bit and only came up when Michael was getting ready to do himself justice for what he’d done ten years before. The idea of getting enjoyment out of watching these fights… Palmer: By that stage it was starting to pop up on the Internet, too. When I met James first there were VHS tapes knocking around. McDonagh: Travellers didn’t know what Facebook or YouTube was. Palmer: The VHS tapes would be improved upon, eventually there were DVDs, and now they’re posting stuff on YouTube. How do you think that perverts the original intent? Palmer: It complicates it, for sure. I’ve had it said to me in Ireland that fair fights as they happen now are not the real thing. But there still are families who are feuding, going out, having referees organize a fair fight between men of the families to sort out some kind of problem. On the other hand, people are really heavily training, there’s money… McDonagh: It’s a business now. When I was doing that it wasn’t a business… nowadays what’s happened, and what’s made me stop is I’ve seen a different trend. It’s fueling the feuds. On a lighter note… Palmer: Love the weather! [Laughs] Knuckle was optioned to be remade into an HBO series [by David Gordon Green, Jody Hill, and Danny McBride]. How much do you think they’ll stay true to the spirit of the film? Palmer: Time’s the judge on that one. It wouldn’t be easy, but it’s a story which is full of drama, there’s family histories, there’s so much to explore in a fictionalization. It’s a really meaty story for actors, lots and lots of strands coming together. Are you worried at all that an adaptation might go astray from what Knuckle is all about? Palmer: You know, if I was getting involved in the fictionalization side of it with the point of view that it had to be exactly as it is in the film, it just wouldn’t happen. There’s got to be some kind of creative freedom to use the film, to use the secret, hidden world that I’ve presented, as a template for dramatic presentation of families who are feuding in a particular way. It’s got to have its own life at a certain point. Who do you think should, or could, play you if your story was dramatized onscreen? McDonagh: That’s a good question! Who could play me? I don’t know. Palmer: George Clooney? McDonagh: I doubt that. [Laughs] I don’t know, I like Vin Diesel, he’s a good character. Palmer: Brad Pitt? McDonagh: Yeah, he’s brilliant at the Irish accent. How did you like his depiction of traveler culture in Snatch? McDonagh: Brilliant, a brilliant portrayal. There are a lot of similarities in Snatch. You see Brad in the movie straight after his fight, smoking a fag; you see Michael after his fight, fag in his mouth, laughing about it! Same as Brad does. Yeah, he’s good. But Vin Diesel’s your pick? McDonagh: Vin Diesel, yeah. Watch Movies Free Online Now

Union Square
An Armian Pictures, Cine-Si production. (Worldwide sales: Cinetic Privileges Management, NY.) Created by Richard Guay, Neda Armian. Co-producers, Glen Trotiner, Peter Bobrow. Directed by Nancy Savoca. Script, Mary Tobler, Savoca. With: Mira Sorvino, Tammy Blanchard, Mike Doyle, Michael Rispoli, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Patti Lupone.Whatever "Union Square" may don't have any originality and surprise, it completely triumphs over through playfully caricatured performances along with a great generosity of spirit. Following a set of greatly different Bronx-born siblings (Mira Sorvino, Tammy Blanchard) who resolve their variations within the wake of the mother's dying, this funny and sincere feature, the very first in nearly ten years from director Nancy Savoca ("Household Saints"), stays carefully to some single apartment within the titular Manhattan neighborhood, but grows its simple narrative to incorporate an uncommon take a look at class-based pride and shame. Commercial prospects seems modest, consistent with the slender pic itself. Beginning in 1989 together with her Sundance prize-winning indie "Real Love,Inch Savoca's keen target the struggles and triumphs of working-class NYers has continued to be persistent despite the fact that "Union Square" is just her sixth feature and her first because the maid-in-Manhattan drama "Grime" in 2003. As though taking way of measuring all that's transformed in communication (and has not), Savoca's latest opens with Sorvino's put up-out Lucy, fresh from the subway in the Bronx, nervously typing and removing plaintive texts to Jay, the married business professional with whom she has been sleeping. Progressively finding, among compulsive shopping fits, that Jay will not want to consider another hookup, the flamboyantly costumed, heavily highlighted Lucy alternately weeps and screams into her mobile phone while tripping through Union Square, momentarily testing the viewer's persistence around her former lover's. With nowhere else to visit, overbearing Lucy pays an surprise trip to her estranged more youthful sister, the prim and proper Jenny (Tammy Blanchard), who runs an all natural meals biz together with her live-in fiance Bill (Mike Doyle) and it has been silently passing for upper-middle-class, telling Bill that her household is from Maine. Using the news from Lucy their mother (observed in homemovies, in which she's performed by Patti Lupone) has lately died of cancer, Jenny literally allows her hair lower, startling Bill and presaging other changes that find her humorously claiming back her working-class Italian roots. Savoca (who co-authored the script with Mary Tobler) causes it to be obvious that, despite Lucy's abrasively absurd attitude, it's Jenny that has been acting nutty by burying her identity within crippling facade of well-to-do control. The sisters' relationship is shown inside a garish brother or sister reality show, moments that are interspersed throughout. Superbly shot in HD by Lisa Leone, "Union Square" is certainly not otherwise schematic, but Savoca's palpable fascination with her figures -- coupled with winning turns from Sorvino and Blanchard -- produces a film whose warmth stands out through its formula. Both Jenny and Lucy -- in addition to Bill -- become suddenly supportive as well as adorable his or her class anxieties cave in to some cool kind of acceptance.
